The Kristaps Porzingis trade the Mavs tried to make with Raptors before Wizards deal

Prior to the NBA trade deadline, the Dallas Mavericks made arguably the most shocking move by trading Kristaps Porzingis to the Washington Wizards for Spencer Dinwiddie and Davis Bertans. However, it appears as though the Mavs tried making a trade with the Toronto Raptors first.

According to the RealGM Wiretap, the Mavs were looking to pull the trigger for Goran Dragic and Gary Trent Jr. However, as Tim McMahon noted on The Lowe Post, Toronto was likely unwilling to part ways with Gary Trent Jr.

Trent Jr. is having a breakout year for the Raptors, averaging over 18 points per game, over three triples per contest and is among the league leaders in steals at 1.9 per game.

The Mavs then pivoted to the deal with the Wizards. Thus far, Mark Cuban are still coming out way ahead in that trade. Dinwiddie is fitting in nicely. After a rough first two games, he has posted between 14 and 24 points in each of the last four games and the Mavs are 5-1 in the games he has played in.

Dallas is 38-25 and only two games behind the Utah Jazz for fourth place and home court in the western conference.

Meanwhile, Porzingis is still yet to get back onto the court for Washington. There has been talk of shutting him down for the rest of the season. Injuries have plagued The Unicorn’s career, going back to his days with the New York Knicks. Porzingis did recently resume practicing 5-on-5, so there is hope that he will return this season.
